Finance Minister Welcomes IMF Mission for Sixth Programme Review

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has welcomed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Mission team, led by Dr. Ruben Atoyan, to commence the Sixth Review of Ghana’s programme under the Extended Credit Facility.

Reflecting on the country’s economic journey since the 2022 crisis, Dr. Forson described the partnership with the Fund as “long, demanding, but ultimately transformative,” noting that Ghana has stabilised its economy, restored credibility, and renewed hope among citizens.

He expressed appreciation on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana, stressing that the progress achieved was the result of discipline and difficult decisions taken in the national interest. “This is, in every material sense, a success,” he said.

Dr. Forson cautioned, however, that the gains made must not lead to complacency. He identified youth unemployment as the most pressing risk, warning that if conditions are not created for the private sector to absorb young people, the pressure on the state to provide jobs would become unsustainable.

Outlining the path forward, the Finance Minister said government’s priority is to ensure that stability translates into investment, jobs, and opportunities for all. “Beyond the numbers, that is the true test of this recovery,” he emphasised.

He disclosed that before the conclusion of the IMF mission, government will take critical decisions on the next phase of Ghana’s economic reform agenda, targeting policy credibility, reform discipline, and investor confidence.

The IMF team, he noted, acknowledged the significant milestone Ghana has reached, crediting government’s strong efforts under the programme.

“With stability restored, credibility regained, and renewed responsibility, our task now is to convert these gains into lasting prosperity,” Dr. Forson concluded.
