Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has joined the people of Dagbon in mourning the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom.
In a heartfelt tribute, the former President described the late monarch as “a great figure of unity, strength and the enduring legacy of a proud and dignified people.” He noted that Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II played a pivotal role in resolving the long-standing Dagbon Crises, which culminated in his rise to the apex of Dagbon leadership during Akufo-Addo’s presidency.
Akufo-Addo recalled the mutual respect and cooperation that characterized the reconciliation process, highlighting the monarch’s acceptance of a special solution to Dagbon’s unique circumstances. He expressed deep gratitude for the honour bestowed upon him in 2019, when Yaa Naa conferred on him the title “Naa Abudani” during the celebration of the first Damba Festival following his enskinment.
“His reign has been marked by a rapid resurgence of dignity, pride, unity and cultural renaissance across Dagbon,” Akufo-Addo stated, urging chiefs, kingmakers and elders to ensure a smooth transition in line with Dagbon’s time-tested customs and traditions.
He welcomed the successful enskinment of a regent, describing it as reassuring, and called on all Ghanaians to support the people of Dagbon during this difficult period.
The former President, together with his wife Rebecca, extended their deepest sympathies to the royal family, chiefs, elders and citizens of Dagbon, praying for the late King’s soul to rest in perfect peace.
