The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has launched a crackdown on the sale of unregistered cigarette‑shaped candy, warning that the product poses serious public health risks and undermines anti‑smoking campaigns.
In collaboration with National Security, the FDA seized quantities of the candy, branded “Cigarette Rod Lollipop”, during an operation in the Central Business District of Accra. A key suspect has been arrested and placed in custody pending investigations into the importation, distribution, and sale of the product.
The Authority stressed that the candy is not registered under the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), its composition is unknown, and its sale constitutes an offence. Officials cautioned that the product could mislead children and normalize smoking behavior, thereby undermining ongoing public health education.
The FDA has urged consumers not to purchase or use the candy and encouraged the public to report any individuals involved in its sale or distribution. Information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality.
The crackdown forms part of the FDA’s broader mandate to safeguard public health and ensure that food and drug products on the Ghanaian market meet regulatory standards.
