A Justice of the Appeal Court, Justice Jennifer Doodo says existing laws must be enforced to protect women especially those in the rural areas.
According to her, the elimination of dangerous customary practices against women and ensuring gender equality goes beyond the creation of unenforced laws.
She said a lot of women in the rural areas continue to suffer from inhumane customary practices in the face of a plethora of legislation to promote the rights of women.
Speaking at a summit held at Kings University College on Friday, 11 March 2022, in commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day, dubbed ‘ Break the bias’.
She said the Ghanaian women still face harsh reality of an endemic state of gender inequality, albeit the fact that the Constitution gives equal rights to both women and men.
However she said the country has to do more beyond the passage of laws and ensure the existing laws are enforced to protect women.
“It is clear that the laws alone is not sufficient to improve the lives of women. Women in Ghana especially in the rural areas still suffer from conservative cultural practices and gender inequalities which is something that requires more than the creation of unenforced laws signing of aspirational treaties” Justice Doodo said.
She called for the passage of the affirmative bill which would help address the social and economic imbalance in the country.
