On Thursday evening, Chelsea’s headline sponsor, Three UK, announced that it had suspended its sponsorship with Chelsea as a result of sanctions placed on the club by the UK government. The telecommunication company has asked that its brand should be removed from Chelsea’s shirts and around the stadium until further notice.
In light of this, it has been speculated that sponsors of the club may also follow suit. Shirt manufacturer, Nike has kept mute on the issue whilst Trivago has issued a statement in support of the club. For the former, although it has kept mute, The Athletic UK reports it remains committed to its partnership with Chelsea. The latter, on the other hand, has issued a statement in support of the Club. The statement said: “We are looking forward to a transition of ownership as soon as possible and want to support the club in this process. We will provide any update to our business relationship if and when appropriate.”
Again, the club’s bank account has been suspended temporarily by Barclays. The reason behind this is that the bank requires time to assess the license Chelsea have been given to continue football-related activities. The club believes it will be lifted soon. According to the Athletic, Chelsea are unable to buy fuel for the team bus as things stand, as the credit cards are temporarily frozen.
Chelsea are hopeful the license would be amended as soon as possible. Insiders believe the Club may not be able to complete the season under the current terms of the license.
