The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has enforced an immediate restriction on motorbike usage after 7:00 pm in selected areas of the region, including the Asokore Mampong Municipality and the Kumasi Metropolis, following the fatal shooting of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaase.
The order, announced by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, was detailed in a statement released on Friday, July 25, 2025. It is part of a series of urgent security interventions designed to restore stability after the tragic event that occurred in Asawase on Tuesday, July 22.
Dr. Amoakohene revealed that REGSEC held an emergency session on Wednesday, July 23, to evaluate the tense situation and initiate swift measures to protect the region. The meeting was prompted by growing unrest following the death of the revered traditional leader, which has deeply unsettled the local population.
Beyond the evening motorbike curfew, REGSEC has also instituted a firm ban on the operation of unregistered motorbikes and those lacking adequate lighting. Additionally, riders are prohibited from wearing smocks a traditional garment the council notes is increasingly being used to conceal weapons.
The council further announced the indefinite suspension of the ongoing intertribal football tournament, citing heightened ethnic tensions and the need to prevent further conflict. Security forces, including the Police and Military, will now intensify their presence in identified high-risk zones to deter retaliatory violence and uphold public safety.
Speaking on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council, Dr. Amoakohene expressed sincere condolences to the family of the late Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge and reassured residents of the government’s resolve to seek justice for the fallen chief.
REGSEC reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining enduring peace in the region and appealed to the public for calm and cooperation as security efforts are scaled up.
