The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the June edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026, across the metropolis, with a strong focus on desilting drains and clearing choked waterways to reduce flooding during the rainy season.
Dubbed “Operation Free Choked Drains,” the exercise will cover all sub-metros, electoral areas, markets, lorry parks, communities, business districts, and public spaces within Accra.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the AMA said the initiative forms part of sustained efforts to improve environmental sanitation, protect public health, and promote collective responsibility for keeping the capital clean. Activities will include desilting and clearing drains, sweeping streets, removing refuse from market areas, cleaning road curbs, and general tidying of communities.
The Assembly stressed that no trading activity will be permitted during the clean-up period. Shops, stalls, table-top businesses, and hawkers are expected to suspend operations until the exercise concludes. Enforcement will be strict, with offenders facing arrest, fines, or prosecution before the sanitation court.
Highlighting the urgency of the exercise, the AMA noted that desilting drains is critical as the rainy season intensifies, increasing the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities. Assembly Members have been directed to lead clean-up activities in their electoral areas to ensure effective coordination and community mobilisation.
The AMA called on residents, traders, transport operators, food vendors, corporate institutions, religious bodies, youth groups, and community-based organisations to participate actively. It cautioned against dumping refuse into drains and open spaces, warning that such practices worsen flooding, pollution, and the spread of diseases.
“The success of this exercise depends largely on public cooperation, discipline, and renewed commitment to keeping Accra clean,” the statement concluded.
