Ablakwa Arrives in Latvia to Pursue Justice for Late Ghanaian Student

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit aimed at seeking clarity and justice in the tragic death of Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Ahyia.

Mr. Ablakwa was warmly received by Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, with whom he held productive bilateral engagements earlier today. He expressed gratitude for the reception and emphasized that the central purpose of his visit was to address the “distressing and unclear circumstances” surrounding the student’s death.

According to the Ghanaian Foreign Minister, his Latvian counterpart has given firm assurances that her government will fully cooperate with Ghana in uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served.

Mr. Ablakwa is leading a six-member delegation comprising senior directors from the Foreign Ministry, a forensic expert, and a pathologist. He disclosed that two members of Nana Agyei’s family, who were invited to join the delegation, faced visa processing delays and could not travel with the team on Saturday night. However, their visas have since been issued, and they are expected to arrive in Latvia tomorrow morning.

Clarifying recent allegations, Mr. Ablakwa stressed that all family members and experts accompanying the delegation are fully funded by the ministry. He dismissed claims of extortion or fake ticketing as baseless and without evidence.

The Ghanaian delegation is scheduled to continue engagements tomorrow with Latvia’s ministries of Interior and Education, as well as investigators handling the case.

Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare and dignity of its citizens abroad, noting that the Foreign Ministry remains resolute in pursuing justice for Nana Agyei Ahyia.
