Government Pledges Greater Investment in Oti Health Sector

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has assured the chiefs and people of the Oti Region that government remains committed to reversing the poor health indicators that have plagued the area over the years.

Speaking during a two-day working visit to the region, Hon. Akandoh called on District Chief Executives (DCEs), Members of Parliament, traditional leaders, clergy, imams, opinion leaders, and other stakeholders to rally behind central government in changing the narrative of healthcare delivery in Oti.

The visit, which was aimed at giving the Minister first-hand insight into the health challenges confronting residents, included a closed-door meeting with the Regional Minister, Members of Parliament, DCEs, and health sector stakeholders. Discussions centered on incentive packages for newly posted medical doctors to the region.

It emerged at the meeting that out of 23 doctors posted to Oti last year, only two reported for duty—a situation described as severely hampering healthcare delivery.

Hon. Akandoh was also shown a 100-acre parcel of land earmarked for the construction of the Oti Regional Hospital, a project expected to significantly improve access to quality healthcare once completed.

At a town hall meeting, the Minister engaged chiefs, opinion leaders, clergy, imams, and community members, appealing for their collective support to help improve health outcomes. He emphasized that government’s investment alone would not be enough without the active involvement of local stakeholders.

The Minister further toured health facilities including the Dambai Polyclinic, Worawora District Hospital, and Jasikan District Hospital, where he interacted with doctors and commended health workers for their dedication and selfless service to the nation.

Hon. Akandoh reiterated government’s resolve to strengthen the health sector in Oti, noting that the planned hospital and improved staffing incentives would mark a turning point in the region’s healthcare delivery.
