Ghana Assures Family of Slain Citizen in US of Support in Pursuit of Justice

The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr James Gyakye Quayson, has assured the family of Akpene Diamond Tetteh, a 37-year-old Ghanaian who was murdered in the United States, of the Government of Ghana’s commitment to supporting efforts to secure justice.

The assurance was given during a courtesy call by the family, led by lawyer Mr Chris Ackummey, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 4, 2026, to discuss the circumstances surrounding Ms Tetteh’s death and measures being taken to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

According to the family, Ms Tetteh was shot by two 15-year-old juveniles in the state of Georgia on February 12, 2026, only weeks after completing her PhD studies.

They indicated that one of the suspects was arrested and arraigned before a court in Savannah, Georgia, on March 3, 2026, and is currently standing trial. The second suspect remains at large.

During the meeting, Mr Gyakye Quayson expressed the government’s deep concern over the incident and conveyed its sympathies to the bereaved family.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to supporting the pursuit of justice and underscored the government’s dedication to protecting the welfare and interests of Ghanaians living abroad.

The Deputy Minister further assured the family that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would provide all necessary support within its mandate and explore available avenues of government assistance to ensure the case receives the attention it deserves.

The meeting forms part of efforts by the government to engage with families of Ghanaians facing tragedies abroad while collaborating with relevant authorities to safeguard the rights and well-being of citizens beyond the country’s borders.
