More than 60,000 teachers across Ghana have successfully completed a three-day promotion exercise organised by the Ghana Education Service (GES), with officials reporting a smooth and incident-free process nationwide.
In a statement issued after the exercise, GES said monitoring officers deployed to centres across the country observed an orderly conduct of the examinations, which ended earlier on Thursday.
According to the Service, this year’s promotion exercise marks a significant milestone in the implementation of its policy to decouple professional ranks from administrative office positions.
The policy is aimed at expanding career progression opportunities for teachers and ensuring that qualified staff are not restricted in their advancement due to the limited number of positions within the administrative structure.
GES indicated that the reform will result in a dramatic increase in the number of teachers attaining higher professional ranks. Under the new arrangement, the Service expects a 1,500 per cent increase in the number of teachers promoted to the rank of Director II and a 340 per cent increase in those advancing to the rank of Director I.
The Service further noted that substantial increases are also expected in promotions across other grades, including Principal Superintendent (PS), Assistant Director II (ADII), Assistant Director I (ADI) and Deputy Director (DD).
GES described the development as a major shift in teacher career progression, reflecting a stronger emphasis on professional competence, experience and dedicated service.
The statement emphasised that, as was the case last year, deliberate measures had been put in place to ensure that all deserving staff have the opportunity to advance to higher ranks without being limited by vacancy constraints.
According to the Service, the policy is expected to positively impact teacher morale, motivation and overall professional development across the education sector.
GES extended its best wishes to all teachers who participated in the exercise and commended the efforts of officers, invigilators, administrators and other stakeholders whose contributions ensured the successful conduct of the nationwide promotion process.
