President John Dramani Mahama has directed the release of GHS 300 million from the Contingency Fund to finance urgent flood relief and mitigation efforts in Accra and other southern communities affected by recent heavy rainfall.
According to a statement from the Presidency, GHS 150 million will be allocated to immediate relief for affected persons and communities, while another GHS 150 million will support flood mitigation measures, including drainage works and protective interventions.
The directive follows days of sustained rainfall that left homes, businesses, and public infrastructure inundated. President Mahama, who conducted an aerial tour of the flooded areas, assured residents of government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
In addition to the financial package, the President ordered the deployment of Ghana Armed Forces and Police personnel to assist the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other agencies in rescue and relief operations.
Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, emphasized that the measures reflect government’s resolve to respond swiftly to emergencies while laying the foundation for long‑term resilience.
