The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Hon. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has issued a strong appeal to African leaders to confront the growing threat of xenophobic violence on the continent, particularly in South Africa.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Hon. Dafeamekpor warned that the resurgence of attacks against fellow Africans undermines the very foundation of Pan-Africanism and jeopardizes Africa’s vision of unity and free movement.
“Africa cannot continue to champion unity and the free movement of people while many Africans live in fear and face violence and insecurity in other African countries,” he stated.
The MP proposed the creation of an African Union early warning system to detect and respond to xenophobic violence before it escalates into wider conflicts. He emphasized that decisive leadership is needed to safeguard citizens and uphold the principles of solidarity and integration that drive the continent’s development agenda.
Failure to act, he cautioned, risks eroding the ideals of Pan-Africanism and weakening Africa’s collective progress.
This call comes amid renewed concerns about xenophobic incidents in South Africa, where foreign nationals—many from other African countries—have faced hostility and violence in recent years.
