GES Rolls Out Nationwide Play-Based Kindergarten Training

The Ghana Education Service (GES), under the leadership of the Ministry of Education and with support from development partners, has announced the nationwide rollout of the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Harmonised Play-Based Kindergarten Training Programme.

This landmark initiative reaffirms government’s commitment to strengthening foundational learning and ensuring that every Ghanaian child receives quality early childhood education that nurtures creativity, curiosity, critical thinking, and holistic development.

Research and global best practices show that children learn most effectively when actively engaged in meaningful, enjoyable, and age-appropriate experiences. The harmonised play-based approach places the child at the centre of learning, creating opportunities for exploration, discovery, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Capacity-Building Nationwide

As part of the implementation, GES is undertaking comprehensive training activities to ensure successful delivery across the country. These include:

  • Training of National Officers
  • Training of 16 Regional ECE Coordinators
  • Training of 261 District ECE Coordinators
  • Training of 261 Deputy Directors of Supervision
  • Training of 261 District Training Officers
  • Training of more than 30,000 Kindergarten teachers

Through this large-scale intervention, the programme is expected to positively impact approximately 1.2 million kindergarten learners annually, laying a strong foundation for improved learning outcomes and lifelong success.

Transforming Early Childhood Education

GES emphasized that quality education must begin at the earliest stages of a child’s development. By equipping educators with the knowledge and skills required to deliver effective play-based learning, the Service is taking a significant step towards transforming early childhood education and shaping the future of Ghana’s young learners.

The Service expressed appreciation to all stakeholders and development partners whose collaboration continues to support efforts aimed at improving educational outcomes for children nationwide.
