Accra yesterday observed the eleventh anniversary of the June 3rd Twin Disaster, a tragic event that claimed over 150 lives in 2015 and left hundreds injured.
In a commemorative message, the Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, urged residents to honor the memory of the victims by working collectively to build a safer and more resilient city. “We remember the lives lost, the families affected, and the lessons learnt. The greatest tribute we can pay is to keep our environment clean and our waterways free of waste,” he stated.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) emphasized that the disaster, which combined a fuel station explosion with severe flooding, remains a stark reminder of the dangers posed by poor sanitation and unregulated urban development.
Eleven years on, the city authorities are calling for renewed civic responsibility, stressing that a cleaner environment and proper waste management are critical to preventing future tragedies.
The AMA reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness and environmental protection measures, while encouraging residents to play their part in safeguarding Accra’s future.
