Zongo Development Fund Urges Calm Amid Debate Over Wesley Girls’ SHS Religious Practices

The Zongo Development Fund (ZoDF) has appealed to Ghanaians to remain calm as national debate intensifies over religious practices and public education at Wesley Girls’ Senior High School.

In a press release issued in Accra, the Fund expressed deep concern about the ongoing discussions surrounding public education and freedom of worship in public schools, noting that tensions have escalated due to divergent arguments from various stakeholders.

The ZoDF called on all parties to respect the constitutional mandate of the Supreme Court, which is currently adjudicating the matter. Until the Court delivers its judgment, the Fund urged citizens to show restraint and avoid actions that may inflame tensions.

Emphasizing Ghana’s longstanding culture of interfaith harmony and peaceful coexistence, the Fund highlighted the country’s unique position as one of the most tolerant societies on the African continent. It attributed this environment to centuries of inter-religious cohabitation and mutual respect.

The statement also referenced Islamic teachings, noting that the Holy Quran makes clear that “there is no compulsion in religion,” underscoring the importance of allowing individuals to practice their faith freely and without coercion.

As a key institution supporting education in marginalized communities, the ZoDF reiterated its commitment to promoting peaceful dialogue and protecting constitutional freedoms. It urged Ghanaians of all faiths to maintain calm as the legal process unfolds.

The statement was signed by Alhaji Halidu Haruna, Chief Executive Officer of the Zongo Development Fund.
