World AIDS Day: Over 334,000 Ghanaians Living With HIV, New Data Shows

Ghana has commemorated World AIDS Day 2025 against the backdrop of troubling statistics revealing that more than 334,700 citizens are currently living with HIV. Data from 2024 recorded over 15,200 new infections and 12,600 AIDS-related deaths, underscoring the persistent public health challenge the epidemic poses nationwide.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 1, government described the occasion as a moment for reflection, solidarity, and renewed determination to achieve an AIDS-free Ghana.

The global theme for this year, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response”, highlights the importance of building resilient health systems capable of sustaining services during crises. Ghana’s national sub-theme, “Africa Unites Against AIDS”, reinforces the call for regional collaboration and shared responsibility in safeguarding public health.

To protect essential services amid dwindling international support, government outlined key interventions. In February 2025, the President instructed the Ministry of Finance to secure funding for critical HIV programmes. Cabinet subsequently endorsed a revised National Workplace HIV and Wellness Policy aimed at strengthening prevention, reducing stigma, and safeguarding employees. A National HIV Response Sustainability Roadmap was also unveiled to mobilise domestic resources, expand access to treatment and prevention, and ensure long-term resilience.

The statement further stressed the role of the private sector, noting that HIV continues to affect workforce productivity and economic growth. Businesses were urged to invest in workplace HIV initiatives, back awareness campaigns, and adopt policies that protect staff.

Government commended partners across public institutions, private enterprises, and civil society for their dedication and innovation in combating HIV. Citizens were encouraged to take self-tests, seek timely treatment, and actively challenge stigma and discrimination.
