WAFCON 2024: Ghana’s Asantewaa, Boakye Earn Spots in CAF’s Team of the Tournament After Bronze Triumph

Ghanaian footballers Grace Asantewaa and Portia Boakye have been selected for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 Best XI, following their standout performances that propelled the Black Queens to a third-place finish in Morocco  their first medal since 2016.

Asantewaa, who anchored Ghana’s midfield with poise and creativity, was instrumental in driving the team’s attacking play. Her ability to control tempo and distribute the ball with precision earned praise from head coach Kim Lars, who noted her unmatched stamina she played every minute of the tournament, including extra-time matches.

Boakye, the team’s captain and defensive stalwart, was a commanding presence at the back. Her leadership and tactical discipline helped Ghana maintain a solid defensive record.

Alongside teammates Cynthia Findiib, Comfort Yeboah, and Susan Ama Duah, Boakye ensured the Black Queens remained resilient under pressure.

In addition to her defensive contributions, Boakye played a key role in set-piece situations, including a well-placed corner kick in the third-place playoff against South Africa that nearly resulted in a goal. Her experience and composure were vital to Ghana’s success.
