Ghana’s creative arts industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor William Addo, affectionately known as “Akpatse”, who passed away peacefully on November 22 at the age of 72 after a prolonged battle with health complications.
Addo was a towering figure in Ghanaian theatre and film, celebrated for his unforgettable performances on GTV’s Thursday Theatre and numerous stage productions. His wit, humour, and commanding presence made him a household name and endeared him to audiences across generations.
A consummate professional, Addo studied Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Ghana before earning a master’s degree in Acting and Directing from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. His academic training laid the foundation for a distinguished career both on stage and in academia.
Beyond his acting career, he held key leadership roles, serving as Director at the National Theatre and Director of Programmes at the National Commission on Culture. He also lectured at the University of Ghana’s Theatre Arts Department, where he mentored many of the country’s most celebrated actors and filmmakers.
In his later years, Addo faced serious health challenges, including visual impairment caused by glaucoma and cataracts. Yet his resilience and unwavering commitment to the craft ensured his continued influence on Ghana’s arts landscape.
William Addo leaves behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire Ghanaian theatre, film, and cultural expression for years to come.
