Employees of the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) are calling for the swift dismissal of Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) Chief Executive Officer, Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, accusing him of poor administration and unwillingness to consult stakeholders.
The workers’ union organized a demonstration on Monday, February 9, alleging that Mr. Ankrah’s tenure has been characterized by ineptitude and an autocratic approach.
They argue that his portrayal of a debt-burdened VALCO requiring foreign capital is a deceptive excuse to dispose of the state-owned enterprise.
Local Union Chairman, Samuel Watchman Agyeman, addressed the crowd, noting that every effort to engage the CEO has been disregarded, including a formal letter submitted on December 18.
“He doesn’t take advice from anybody… What he says he wants to do, whether good or bad, is what he does,” Agyeman emphasized. He appealed to the President to remove the CEO, declaring him “not fit to occupy a leadership position.”
In opposition to GIADEC’s stance, the union maintains that VALCO has the inherent ability to run profitably without surrendering control to external financiers.
They describe the ongoing pursuit of a strategic partner as an indirect sale of the national asset and demand its immediate suspension in favor of a transparent assessment of the company’s true potential.
