United Party Condoles with Families of Stampede Victims, Calls for Urgent Action on Youth Unemployment

The United Party (UP) has expressed deep shock and sadness over the tragic stampede that claimed six lives during the Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.

In a statement signed by the party’s Director of Communications, Solomon Owusu, the UP extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished a swift recovery to those injured. The statement noted that five victims remain in intensive care while twelve others are in critical condition.

“The United Party has received with deep shock and sadness the tragic news of the death of six young, able-bodied Ghanaians,” the release said. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones in such a painful and avoidable manner.”

The party described the incident as a painful reminder of the growing problem of youth unemployment in Ghana. It emphasized that the desperation of thousands of young people applying to join the security services highlights the magnitude of the unemployment crisis confronting the nation.

“The sheer number of young Ghanaians applying to join the security services is a stark manifestation of the unemployment crisis that continues to rob our nation of its potential,” the statement read. “If not addressed decisively, this situation threatens to fuel frustration, despair, and the rise of social vices across our communities.”

The UP urged the government to treat the tragedy as a wake-up call to confront corruption, economic stagnation, and the lack of sustainable job creation. The party criticized the diversion of national resources and the erosion of public confidence in state institutions, stressing that corruption has worsened economic challenges and diminished hope among the youth.

“The government must seize this moment to reset the national agenda to restore dignity, create jobs, and rekindle hope among our teeming unemployed youth,” Mr. Owusu said. “Ghana’s young men and women deserve more than empty promises; they deserve a country that works for them.”

The United Party reiterated its commitment to youth empowerment, job creation, and the diversification of Ghana’s economy through industrialization and modern agriculture as key pillars for sustainable growth.
