TVET Service Suspends Three Principals Over Alleged Extortion and Unauthorized Fees

The leadership of the Ghana TVET Service has promptly initiated disciplinary measures against three Principals of Technical Institutes following substantiated reports of unauthorized fee imposition and extortion within their schools.

The institutions involved are Agona Swedru Technical Institute in the Central Region, Sunyani Technical Institute in the Bono Region, and Madina Technical Institute in the Greater Accra Region.

A press release from the Ghana TVET Service revealed that the complaints pertain to the enforcement of various illegitimate charges, such as admission levies, boarding arrangement fees, costs for switching from day to boarding status, charges for fashion practical materials, payments for bedsheets, and Parent-Teacher Association dues.

The Service highlighted that these actions breach the government’s Free TVET Policy, which ensures cost-free access to technical and vocational education, and contradict the Service’s mandate to uphold equity and openness in the admissions process.

To address the issue, the Service has established independent committees to carry out a comprehensive and unbiased investigation into the claims. The makeup of these panels will be disclosed in due time, and their conclusions will inform any further disciplinary decisions.

In the interim, the Heads of the three schools have been placed on a 30-day administrative suspension, effective immediately.

During their absence, oversight of the institutions will be managed by the respective Regional Directors, who will assume operational responsibilities in addition to their existing roles:

Madam Hannah Asamoah, Central Regional Director — Agona Swedru Technical Institute

Mr. Gabriel Gyamfi, Bono Regional Director — Sunyani Technical Institute

Engr. Juliana Nkrumah, Greater Accra Regional Director — Madina Technical Institute

The Ghana TVET Service reiterated its firm stance against corruption, coercion, and any behavior that compromises the credibility of the TVET framework.

“Management remains resolute in upholding accountability, transparency, and fairness in the management of Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions across Ghana,” the statement affirmed.

Furthermore, the Service reassured students, parents, and the wider public of its unwavering dedication to safeguarding the integrity of the admissions process and maintaining exemplary standards of conduct throughout all TVET institutions nationwide.
