The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) has called for a 50 per cent upward review of base pay as organised labour prepares to meet the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations for the next round of salary talks.
The union argues that the sharp rise in the cost of living, coupled with higher utility charges and escalating fuel prices, has drastically reduced the purchasing power of public sector workers, leaving many struggling to make ends meet.
TEWU insists that only a significant wage increment can restore equity and provide much-needed relief to employees facing current economic hardships.
Responding to the concerns, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, acknowledged the legitimacy of the union’s demands but stressed the need to balance them with the state’s financial realities.
He assured that government will thoroughly evaluate the proposal as part of its ongoing engagement with organised labour, with the aim of reaching a fair and sustainable outcome.
