At the High-Level Consultative Conference on the Next Steps to the Landmark United Nations Resolution on the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans, held in Accra, the President of the Republic of Senegal, H.E. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, commended President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana for convening the historic gathering.
President Faye reaffirmed Senegal’s commitment to advancing historical justice, dignity, and stronger ties between Africa and its diaspora. He hailed the adoption of the UN resolution as a “major step forward for universal consciousness,” noting that for the first time the international community had recognized with clarity the magnitude of the tragedy represented by the transatlantic slave trade and racial slavery.
The Senegalese leader emphasized that reparatory justice must not be seen as a source of division but as an instrument for building a more just, balanced, and equitable international order. He outlined the broad dimensions of reparations — historical, cultural, memorial, human, and economic — stressing the importance of recognition of historical truths, restoration of dignity, restitution of cultural heritage, promotion of education and research, and stronger links between Africa and the diaspora.
Calling for concrete action, President Faye urged the engagement of young people, intellectuals, artists, and civil society in shaping the reparatory justice agenda. He highlighted the need to strengthen cooperation among Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, and other partners committed to advancing justice, remembrance, and reconciliation.
His remarks reinforced the growing momentum across Africa and the diaspora to translate the UN resolution into meaningful initiatives that honor the past while building a fairer future.
