Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations,Samuel Nartey George has delivered a firm warning to DSTV, stating that the broadcaster’s licence will be revoked by Wednesday, August 7, if it fails to adjust its subscription rates in Ghana to meet regulatory standards.
During the Government Accountability Series held on Friday, August 1, the Minister disclosed that he had officially communicated with the National Communications Authority (NCA), instructing them to begin the process of suspending DSTV’s licence should the company continue to ignore demands for price revision.
“I have directed the NCA to act swiftly. If by the 7th of August DSTV has not complied, their broadcasting licence will be suspended,” he announced.
Mr. George explained that his decision was prompted by a recent correspondence from DSTV, in which the company defended its pricing model by referencing broader economic challenges.
“DSTV claims the Ghanaian Cedi has depreciated by over 200% in the last eight years, and therefore, they cannot reduce their prices,” the Minister noted.
Nonetheless, Mr. George rejected the justification, arguing that the pricing has been unfair to Ghanaian consumers for far too long.
“My loyalty is to the Ghanaian people. They have been exploited for years, and it’s time we put a stop to it,” he declared.
“We will not permit foreign service providers to exploit our citizens under the pretense of economic hardship.”
