The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU), under the Trades Union Congress (TUC-Ghana), has formally notified the Ghana Police Service of plans to embark on a nationwide strike and peaceful protest on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
In a letter dated September 15, 2025, to the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, the Union said the action follows 12 months of unpaid salaries and benefits, describing the situation as a major source of hardship for railway workers and their families.
The arrears, dating back to October 2024, have left many employees in severe financial distress, leading to family breakdowns, health problems such as strokes, and disruption of children’s education.
Despite repeated appeals to the Ministry of Transport and other authorities, the Union noted that no negotiations, mediation, or arbitration—as required under the Labour Act—have been initiated.
“By Monday, 22nd September 2025, if no concrete measures are taken by the Ministry of Transport to address these issues, we shall proceed to act under Sections 160 and 171 of the Labour Act effective 30th September 2025,” the letter, signed by General Secretary Benjamin Essuman, stated.
The planned protest will involve workers from Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa. The procession will start at the Ministry of Transport in Accra, move to Parliament to present a petition, continue to the Ghana Railway Development Authority, and end at the TUC-Ghana headquarters.
The Union assured police the demonstration would be peaceful and in full compliance with the law, requesting security support to protect participants and the public.
Copies of the notice have been sent to the Chief of Staff, the Speaker of Parliament, the National Labour Commission, the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Transport, the Ghana Railway Company Limited, and the Trades Union Congress.
