Prez. Mahama Opens 2026 Judicial Year of African Court

Former President John Dramani Mahama has commended the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights for its resilience and moral leadership over the past two decades.

Speaking at the opening of the Court’s 2026 judicial year, Mr. Mahama praised the institution’s role in advancing justice and human rights across the continent. “Over the past two decades of its operation, the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights has proven time and again that it has the fortitude and courage to recalibrate our moral compass,” he stated.

The ceremony, held at the Court’s headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania, brought together judges, legal practitioners, diplomats, and representatives of civil society. Discussions centered on the Court’s achievements, ongoing challenges, and its evolving role in safeguarding rights and freedoms within Africa’s legal landscape.

Officials noted that the 2026 judicial year will focus on strengthening access to justice, enhancing cooperation with national courts, and reinforcing the Court’s mandate to protect fundamental rights across member states.
