Police Officer Interdicted Over Alleged Assault on Journalist During Ablekuma North Rerun

The Ghana Police Service has taken swift action following the circulation of a viral video showing a police officer allegedly assaulting a journalist during election coverage at Ablekuma North.

In a statement released on Friday, the Service confirmed that the officer involved has been immediately withdrawn from election duty and interdicted. The case has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for a full investigation.

“The Ghana Police Service has monitored a viral video in which one of our officers is seen assaulting a reporter,” the statement read. “The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North and in line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been interdicted and referred to the PPSB for investigation.”

The incident, which has sparked public outrage and concern over press freedom and police conduct, occurred during the ongoing district-level elections. The journalist, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was reportedly covering the electoral process when the altercation took place.

The Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to transparency and accountability, promising a thorough probe into the matter.
“We would like to assure the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the matter and further updates will be communicated,” the statement concluded.
