The People’s National Party (PNP) has formally requested that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) launch an investigation into what it terms an “extraordinary” budgetary provision of Gh₵78 million for the Office of Government Communication, headed by Minister Felix Ofosu Kwakye.
In a petition sent to EOCO’s Executive Director, Mr. Raymond Acher, on Monday, September 8, the PNP leadership argued that the allocation—outlined in the 2025 national budget—raises serious concerns about transparency, accountability, and the responsible use of state funds.
The party pointed out that the office in question is not a full ministry, yet has been granted a budget significantly higher than what was previously allocated to the Ministry of Information, which had oversight of six agencies.
According to the petition, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye’s office currently supervises only three agencies. The PNP is therefore demanding clarification on which agencies these are, the process by which they were reassigned, and the details of their budgets prior to the restructuring.
The party further alleged that portions of the funds could be directed to selected media outlets, civil society groups, and influential figures in ways that might bolster the political interests of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The PNP stressed that its call is purely to safeguard accountability in the management of public finances.
“At a time when the nation is grappling with economic challenges, high youth unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, and underfunded public institutions, such non-transparent allocations must be thoroughly examined,” the petition stated.
Party Founder and Leader, Janet Asana Nabla, urged EOCO to demand a comprehensive financial breakdown of the Gh₵78 million, confirm the agencies under the minister’s control, and make its findings public to rebuild citizens’ trust.
“We elected leaders to serve Ghana—not to enrich themselves or consolidate political power through questionable funding practices,” the petition concluded.
