Parliamentary Committee Examines Obuasi Mine’s Environmental Impact Assessment

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Science and Technology has begun a three-day working visit to the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Gold Mine as part of its oversight responsibilities.

Leading the delegation, the Ranking Member, Hon. Prof. Hamza Adam, explained that the visit is a fact-finding mission to examine the mine’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and assess compliance with existing environmental regulations. He noted that the Committee is particularly focused on adherence to Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 246, stressing that several water bodies in mining communities have been seriously affected.

Prof. Adam emphasized that Parliament has the authority to recommend suspension or revocation of licences where violations are established. He, however, clarified that the Committee’s mission was not intended to victimise any individual or company, but to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices.

Welcoming the Committee, the Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Ing. Samuel Pope, introduced his management team and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to environmental protection. He stated that environmental sustainability remains a top priority for the company, adding that AngloGold Ashanti operates in strict compliance with the requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Minerals Commission, and the Lands Commission, while also adhering to international best practices.

The Committee is expected to engage with management, inspect operational sites, and interact with affected communities before concluding its visit.
