Parliamentary Committee Monitors Sports Facilities in Greater Accra

The Select Committee on Youth and Sports has undertaken a monitoring exercise across three major sports facilities in the Greater Accra Region: the Borteyman Sports Complex, the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, and the Accra Sports Stadium.

Led by Chairman Hon. Henry Ernest Norgbey, the Committee began its inspection at the Borteyman Sports Complex. Key challenges identified included the absence of electricity due to unpaid arrears, limited activity resulting from few sporting events, poor management and maintenance practices, and problems with the underground drainage system beneath the pitch.

At the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, management briefed the Committee on operations and highlighted pressing concerns such as infrastructure defects, the high cost of replacing damaged equipment, inadequate maintenance tools, and stakeholder interference.

The monitoring exercise concluded at the Accra Sports Stadium, which is currently undergoing maintenance. The Committee noted major issues including faulty water systems, defective floodlights, a malfunctioning scoreboard, and unsuitable washroom facilities.

Despite these challenges, the Committee commended the management of both the Accra Sports Stadium and the University of Ghana Sports Stadium for their efforts in maintaining the facilities. Chairman Norgbey assured that the Committee would engage the Ministry of Sports to address the concerns raised across the various stadia.

This monitoring exercise underscores Parliament’s commitment to ensuring that Ghana’s sports infrastructure is properly maintained and fit for purpose, especially as the nation continues to position itself as a hub for regional and international sporting events.
