The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced the suspension of parliamentary sittings to enable Ghana to host the 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family and Sovereignty, scheduled for June 3–6, 2026.
Addressing the media, the Speaker emphasized that Parliament remains the most fitting venue for the continental gathering, which will convene Speakers, Members of Parliament, policymakers, academics, civil society leaders, and development partners from across Africa and beyond.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin disclosed that over 30 countries have confirmed participation, underscoring the conference’s importance as a platform for strengthening cooperation among African states and advancing the role of Parliaments in safeguarding societal values. He assured participants of Ghana’s readiness, citing comprehensive preparations in accommodation, security, media coverage, and technical arrangements.
Themed “Consolidating Parliamentary Consensus: Advancing the African Charter on Family Values and Sovereignty,” the conference is expected to facilitate dialogue on emerging challenges confronting African societies and foster stronger policy frameworks across the continent.
The Speaker described the gathering as timely, particularly in the face of growing social challenges such as xenophobic violence in parts of Africa. He expressed confidence that the conference would yield strong resolutions aimed at protecting African values, strengthening unity, and promoting people-centred development.
Rt. Hon. Bagbin called on Ghanaians to support and actively participate in the historic event, which will also feature the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, as Special Guest of Honour.
