Parliament Refers Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s Nomination as Chief Justice to Appointments Committee

The Speaker of Parliament has forwarded the nomination of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie for the position of Chief Justice to the Appointments Committee for vetting and recommendation.

This comes after President John Mahama formally presented his name to the House for consideration and approval, in line with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

Making the referral on the floor of Parliament, Speaker Alban Bagbin instructed the Appointments Committee to fast-track its work and submit a report to the plenary for a final decision.

The move follows the dismissal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo on grounds of stated misconduct. Her removal was based on the findings of a constitutional committee set up under Article 146 of the Constitution.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has been serving in an acting capacity since April 2025 after Justice Torkornoo’s suspension, is currently the most senior member of the Supreme Court.

He was first appointed to the highest court in June 2008 by then-President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Born on December 26, 1956, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie began his early education at Goaso before proceeding to Konongo Odumase Secondary School, where he obtained both his O-Level and A-Level certificates.

He later pursued law at the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, where he was called to the Bar in 1983. Over the years, he has risen steadily through the judicial ranks, serving as a Circuit Court Judge in Kumasi, a High Court Judge at Duayaw Nkwanta, and later as a Court of Appeal Judge before his elevation to the Supreme Court.

Should Parliament approve his nomination, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will formally assume leadership of the Judiciary at a pivotal moment, following the dramatic exit of his predecessor.
