Leaders of both caucuses in Parliament have delivered their final remarks to conclude debate on the State of the Nation Address (SONA) presented by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, February 27, 2026.
In his closing statement, Minority Leader Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticized the Government’s priorities, arguing that the decision to purchase a Presidential Jet while many hospitals remain incomplete was unacceptable. He further contended that the President had failed to fulfill his promise of creating jobs for the youth, noting that many young people were excluded from recent security service recruitment exercises due to lack of internet access. He also raised concerns about the reduction in cocoa producer prices, which he said had worsened the plight of farmers.
Responding, Majority Leader Hon. Mahama Ayariga defended the Government’s record, stating that under President Mahama, cocoa producer prices had reached unprecedented levels. He emphasized that farmers in regions such as Sefwi, Enchi, and Tepa were now seeing a fairer share of global chocolate revenues. “This is not mere commerce; it is the restoration of the dignity of the Ghanaian soil,” he declared, adding that Ghana was moving from being exporters of raw toil to masters of its own industrial destiny by investing in local processing.
At the conclusion of the debate, the House adopted the motion on the SONA, which was moved by Hon. Isaac Adongo, MP for Bolgatanga Central, and seconded by Hon. John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South.
