The Black Star Square in Accra has become the center of attraction, where the state funeral for six of the victims of the August 6 helicopter crash is currently underway. The crash, which occurred en route to Obuasi for an official anti galamsey campaign, claimed the lives of eight prominent individuals, including top government and military officials.

High profile mourners, including former President Nana Akufo-Addo, Ministers of state, Members of Parliament, military chiefs, and clergy, are in attendance. The families of the deceased, including the visibly distraught mother and children of Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, sit close to the caskets, surrounded by relatives and well wishers.

The six being honoured today are:

* Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah

* NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong

* Former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye

* Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala

* Flying Officer Twum Ampadu

* Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah

The other two victims, Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed were buried earlier in separate ceremonies.

Traffic diversions have been implemented around the Square and surrounding roads as mourners continue to arrive. The event has drawn citizens from across the country who are present to pay their respects, with many expressing their condolences and admiration for the service of the fallen.

Government has described the ceremony as a national farewell to heroes who died in active duty. The funeral will conclude later today with the burial of the victims.

The crash, which is under investigation with assistance from US forensic experts, remains a sombre reminder of the risks borne by those serving the nation.
