NHIA Achieves 70 Percent Universal Health Coverage

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced that Ghana’s Health Insurance Scheme has reached 70 percent Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as of the first half of 2026, marking a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare delivery.

Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe disclosed the achievement during a staff durbar at the Authority’s Head Office in Accra, attributing the progress to the dedication and commitment of NHIA staff nationwide.

“These are things that people see… that connect us to people, and that is why I am so proud that when we came in, our coverage was 56 percent and now I am being told we are hovering around 70 percent. I think we must be proud of ourselves,” he said.

Dr. Bampoe credited the gains to several innovative outreach programmes, including Market Storm, Campus Connect, and the Faith and Wellness Drive, which have expanded access and attracted new subscribers, particularly among the younger generation.

While commending staff for their efforts, he cautioned against complacency, urging them to work harder to push the NHIS to the next level. He emphasized that the next phase of the Authority’s transformation agenda would demand fresh thinking, smarter systems, and innovative approaches to service delivery.

Dr. Bampoe also called for teamwork and collaboration, stressing that the institution’s success depends on shared commitment to professionalism, integrity, punctuality, accountability, and excellent customer service. He further urged staff to use resources judiciously, noting that every cedi saved through responsible stewardship is a cedi that can be reinvested to improve services for Ghanaians.

The announcement positions Ghana’s NHIS as one of the leading models of health insurance coverage on the African continent, reflecting the country’s progress toward achieving full Universal Health Coverage.
