The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has instructed all teachers holding hard copies of the Senior High School Physical Education and Health teachers’ manual to return them immediately.
The directive comes in response to concerns over a contentious definition of gender identity contained in the manual, which is currently in use in schools.
NaCCA Board Chairman, Prof. Vincent Assanful, confirmed the move in an interview with Adom News. He explained that a comprehensive review of the curriculum—from the basic to the secondary level—is underway to ensure it reflects Ghanaian values while safeguarding educational standards.
The manual defines gender identity as an individual’s deeply felt internal sense of gender, which may or may not align with the sex assigned at birth. It further notes that gender may encompass being male, female, or a blend of both, extending beyond a strictly binary framework.
Prof. Assanful stressed that the review will not be limited to the gender identity section but will critically examine the entire manual to guarantee clarity and appropriateness.
