MoH Leads National Health Compact Initiative

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has unveiled a landmark National Health Compact designed to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system through improved coordination, financing, and accountability.

Speaking at a consultative roundtable, Minister for Health Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said the initiative is central to advancing Universal Health Coverage and improving healthcare delivery nationwide. He highlighted progress already made, including the Free Primary Healthcare Initiative, expanded maternal and child health services, wider immunization coverage, stronger disease surveillance, and digital health innovations.

The Minister emphasized government’s priorities in primary healthcare, sustainable health financing, local pharmaceutical and vaccine production, and emergency preparedness to tackle rising non-communicable diseases and inequities in access.

Vice President of the World Bank Group, Dr. Mamta Murthi, commended Ghana’s efforts, stressing the importance of strong primary healthcare systems, early disease detection, and integrated delivery models. She noted that technology and local manufacturing are increasingly vital in strengthening health systems, particularly as countries face financial pressures and growing burdens of chronic disease.

The roundtable brought together officials from the World Bank, heads of agencies, development partners, civil society organizations, and health professionals to deliberate on the implementation of the National Health Compact, which is expected to serve as a blueprint for building a resilient and inclusive healthcare system.
