(MoGCSP) Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Vulnerable Persons After Heavy Rains

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable persons affected by the recent heavy rains that have impacted several parts of the country.

In a statement issued by its Public Affairs Unit, the Ministry expressed sympathy to individuals, families and communities who have suffered losses and disruptions as a result of the adverse weather conditions.

The Ministry commended emergency response agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), security services, volunteers, traditional and community leaders, as well as citizens whose support and selfless actions have brought relief to affected populations.

According to the statement, the Ministry is collaborating closely with relevant government institutions to ensure that social protection remains a key component of ongoing response and recovery efforts. Particular attention, it noted, is being directed towards children, older persons, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups to guarantee that they receive the care and support they require.

MoGCSP stressed that protecting the welfare, dignity and wellbeing of at-risk populations remains a priority for government. It called on families, communities, faith-based organisations, civil society groups and development partners to work together to ensure that no one is left behind during and after emergencies.

The Ministry further encouraged households to strengthen their preparedness for future disasters by keeping important documents secure, maintaining updated emergency contacts, checking regularly on elderly persons and neighbours living alone, and ensuring that children understand basic safety measures.

Employers were also urged to prioritise the wellbeing of their workers during severe weather conditions by adopting flexible work arrangements where possible and taking family responsibilities into consideration.

The statement added that MoGCSP will continue to collaborate with humanitarian organisations, development partners and local communities to ensure that the needs of children, older persons, persons with disabilities, survivors of abuse and exploitation, and other vulnerable populations remain central to emergency response, recovery and long-term resilience-building efforts.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to fostering a coordinated and inclusive approach to disaster management, emphasising that collective action before, during and after emergencies is essential to protecting lives and strengthening national resilience.
