Minority Vows to Resist ‘Certificate of Urgency’ Bills

The Minority in Parliament has pledged to fiercely resist any move by government to push legislation through under a certificate of urgency.

Speaking at the Minority Caucus’ “Holding Government to Account” press briefing, Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accused the Majority side of exploiting the urgency procedure to fast-track bills without proper parliamentary scrutiny.

He stressed that the Minority will uphold its oversight role to guarantee that proposed laws receive thorough examination in the interest of citizens.

Afenyo-Markin cautioned that the Minority will not permit Parliament to be reduced to what he termed a “rubber-stamp” body.

“We promise the people of Ghana that when Parliament reconvenes on February 3, we are no more going to allow the Majority to have their way. The Majority has turned Parliament into a parliament of fast-track and no scrutiny, a rubber-stamp parliament where everything comes under certificate of urgency.

They should be ready to beat us in the chamber. We will resist with all the energy in us. No more certificate of urgency,” he declared.
