Minority Demands Removal of Foreign Minister Over Migration, Diplomatic Concerns

The Minority in Parliament has called for an urgent overhaul of Ghana’s migration and foreign relations policy, including the immediate dismissal of the Foreign Minister. They accuse the minister of reckless diplomacy and failing to protect the country’s national interest.

At a press briefing, the Minority described Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as having “outlived his usefulness,” claiming he lacks the temperament to manage complex bilateral relations.

According to the group, Mr Ablakwa has prioritised rhetoric over results, leaving Ghana “less safe, less respected, and more vulnerable” on the international stage.

The Minority therefore urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to appoint a competent and experienced diplomat with steady judgement and a genuine commitment to Ghana’s long-term interests, rather than what they termed “personal political theatre.”

Policy Proposals

The Minority outlined several measures to reset Ghana’s foreign and migration policies:

  • Establish a high-level technical working group with the United States to resolve outstanding migration documentation and consular cooperation issues.
  • Withdraw the government’s “tit-for-tat” deportation policy with Israel and restore normal consular relations in line with international practice.
  • Appoint a Special Envoy for Diaspora and Migration Affairs, reporting directly to the President, to handle sensitive migration matters with seriousness.

The group appealed to civil society organisations, professional associations, diaspora groups, and all patriotic Ghanaians to demand accountability and support a reset of the country’s foreign and migration policies.
