The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, joined stakeholders as Special Guest of Honour at the Women in Sustainability Africa (WiSA) International Festival 2026, held at the Cedi Conference Centre, University of Ghana, Legon. The festival was themed “Empowering Women for the Economic Sustainability of Africa.”
The event convened women leaders, policymakers, development partners, civil society organisations, traditional and religious leaders, corporate institutions, and sustainability advocates to deliberate on strategies for strengthening women’s economic empowerment and promoting sustainable development across Africa.
In her address, Dr. Lartey commended WiSA and its partners for convening what she described as a timely and strategic dialogue of regional and national importance. She noted that the festival was both a celebration of African women’s achievements and a call to action for stakeholders to accelerate investments, strengthen policies, and deepen partnerships that place women at the centre of Africa’s sustainable development agenda.
The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to advancing women’s economic empowerment and inclusive development, highlighting social protection interventions such as the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, which continues to support vulnerable households while contributing to poverty reduction and social inclusion. She stressed that empowering women remains a key pillar in reducing poverty and driving national growth.
Dr. Lartey also pointed to Ghana’s historic milestone of electing its first female Vice President, describing it as a strong symbol of hope and commitment toward women’s advancement and leadership participation.
Earlier, she extended her best wishes to candidates sitting for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), urging them to remain focused, disciplined, and committed throughout the examination period. She appealed to parents and guardians to support their wards by reducing domestic chores and distractions, emphasizing that collective support is essential to ensuring their success.
