Prez. Mahama Directs School Feeding Caterers to Source Eggs Locally to Support Farmers

President John Dramani Mahama has called on caterers under the School Feeding Programme to procure eggs directly from local vendors facing low sales, in a bid to support struggling poultry farmers and improve nutrition for school children.

Speaking at the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative in the Ashanti Region, the president highlighted the plight of poultry farmers who are grappling with surplus stock and limited market demand.

“I have asked the caterers for school feeding to purchase eggs from the poultry farmers , who has excess eggs and insufficient sales, so we can feed the kids with them,” President Mahama said.

The directive is part of a broader effort to link agricultural producers with institutional buyers, ensuring that farmers benefit from guaranteed markets while children receive nutritious meals. It also aligns with the goals of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme, which seeks to enhance rural livelihoods through targeted interventions in agriculture, education, and infrastructure.

Stakeholders in the poultry industry have welcomed the move, noting that it could help stabilize egg prices and reduce post-production losses. The School Feeding Programme currently serves thousands of pupils nationwide, and integrating locally sourced eggs into its menu could provide a reliable outlet for farmers while boosting protein intake among children.

President Mahama’s remarks underscore his administration’s commitment to addressing food insecurity, supporting smallholder farmers, and strengthening the link between agriculture and social welfare programmes.
