Journalist Assaulted, Detained During Coverage of Demolition Exercise — JoyNews Reports

According to a report from JoyNews, a disturbing incident unfolded on Spintex Road, Accra, during a demolition exercise on Tuesday, July 30, 2025. The media outlet reports that its journalist, Carlos Calony, was physically attacked and unlawfully detained while reporting live from the scene.

Calony, accompanied by cameraman Jonathan Mensah Quaye, was on-site conducting interviews when men suspected to be National Security operatives  dressed in military attire  assaulted them without warning. JoyNews states that Calony was in conversation with a witness when officers allegedly assaulted the civilian and proceeded to hit the journalist in the neck.

The situation reportedly intensified as the operatives damaged their camera equipment, seized Calony’s mobile phones, and forcibly placed him into a vehicle. He was later taken to a National Security facility at Bluegate. His release was secured only after intervention by the Minister for the Interior.

JoyNews also disclosed that Calony’s microphone was broken in the altercation and that he is currently receiving medical attention for neck injuries sustained during the attack.

The incident was broadcast live on JoyNews, drawing nationwide concern over what the outlet describes as a direct attack on press freedom. In an official statement, JoyNews unequivocally condemned the assault, characterizing it as a violation of media independence, access to information, and freedom of expression enshrined in Ghana’s constitution.

The organization is demanding:

  • A swift and transparent inquiry into the matter
  • Disciplinary actions against the officers involved

JoyNews emphasized that journalists must be allowed to carry out their work without fear or threat, and reaffirmed its commitment to serving the Ghanaian public.
