“Government Committed to Stronger Social Protection” — Minister Lartey

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening social protection systems in Ghana.

She made the remarks during a courtesy call by Mr. Robert S. Chase, the World Bank’s Social Policy Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, who is in the country to deepen collaboration and support Ghana’s social protection agenda.

Discussions focused on advancing cooperation between Government and the World Bank, particularly in implementing key interventions under the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project 2. These include the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) cash transfer and technical support to the Ghana School Feeding Programme, among other initiatives.

Dr. Lartey highlighted the impact of the LEAP programme, noting that Government is expanding beneficiary households from 350,000 to 400,000 to reach more vulnerable populations. She emphasised the need for stronger partnerships, including private sector involvement, and assured that measures are being put in place to ensure smooth transition for beneficiaries exiting social intervention programmes.

The Minister also pointed to legislative progress, including the Social Protection Act and the Affirmative Action Act, aimed at improving coordination and accountability within the sector.

Mr. Chase reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s efforts, particularly in directing resources to improve the lives of vulnerable groups.
