The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced that government has approved and will begin payment of gratuity arrears owed to retired military personnel under Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129.
According to a statement issued by the Department of Public Relations at Burma Camp, the decision follows extensive consultations between the Military High Command, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Defence to resolve a five-year impasse over the gratuity formula.
The approved roadmap provides for a phased two-year implementation, with payments scheduled in four instalments between February 2026 and December 2027. The first tranche is expected to be released by close of business on Friday, February 27, 2026.
A total of 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers who retired from November 2020 will benefit from the arrears. The GAF further noted that all future retirements will be processed fully in line with CI 129, ensuring personnel receive their full entitlements at the correct rate.
“This development brings closure to a matter that had remained unresolved since 2020 and ensures that affected personnel and all others who will retire subsequently receive their full entitlements,” the statement read.
The Military High Command expressed appreciation to government for supporting the resolution of the long-standing issue.
