Girls in Tech Camp Inspires Future Innovators in Tamale

The Ghana Education Service (GES), in collaboration with UNESCO and Beijing Normal University, has concluded a week-long Girls in Tech Camp held from April 13 to 17, 2026, at Bagabaga College of Education in Tamale. The initiative underscored the importance of equipping girls with technological skills to compete on the global stage.

More than sixty girls from schools including Northern School of Business, Tamale Senior High School, Tamale Girls Senior High School, Bagabaga College of Education Model School, and Danshele KG and Primary School took part in intensive training, orientation, and practical sessions designed to boost their digital and technological competencies.

The programme offered daily experiences that broadened participants’ understanding of opportunities within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). A memorable highlight was a visit to Red Clay Studio, where the girls observed how creativity and innovation can be transformed into real-world outcomes. They also engaged with accomplished female mentors who shared personal stories, offered guidance, and reinforced the message that their ambitions are valid and achievable.

Representing the Director-General of GES, Prof. Kofi Davis, the Deputy Director-General (Quality and Access), Dr. Issahaque Munawaru, urged the girls to take STEM education seriously and assured them of the Service’s continued support. Mrs. Olicia Opare, Director of the Science Division, emphasized ongoing efforts to make STEM—traditionally male-dominated—more inclusive and appealing to girls. The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mr. Alhassan Alidu Jnr., also attended to lend his support.

The camp concluded with recognition of outstanding performances, with Tamale Senior High School (Tamasco) named Overall Best School for its commitment and excellence throughout the programme.

The Girls in Tech Camp stands as a milestone in Ghana’s drive to close the gender gap in STEM and nurture the next generation of female innovators.
