Ghana’s Embassy in the United States has advised nationals to strictly comply with American immigration laws and avoid overstaying their visas, cautioning that any misuse of the recently reinstated visa benefits could negatively affect the broader Ghanaian community.
Speaking on behalf of Ghana’s Ambassador to the U.S., Victor Emmanuel Smith, the Deputy Head of Mission, Jane Gasu Aheto, delivered the message during the 40th anniversary celebration of the GaDangme Association in Washington.
She revealed that the U.S. has relaxed its visa restrictions for Ghanaians, allowing qualified applicants to now secure multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years. This marks a reversal of the previous policy, which had limited most Ghanaian travelers to single-entry visas valid for only three months.
While welcoming the change, Ms. Aheto emphasized the need for responsibility.
“After many deliberations, the restrictions on visa for Ghana has been restored and once again Ghanaians can be eligible for up to five years multiple entry visas. While this is very welcome news, it is imperative that we as a people do not abuse the privileges granted to us. We must ensure that we abide by the rules governing visas, responsibly, so we do not suffer adverse consequences,” she said.
The Embassy also reiterated its commitment to supporting Ghanaians in the U.S., but underscored that observing immigration regulations is crucial to sustaining the renewed visa arrangement.
“The Embassy stands in readiness to offer support and assistance to our fellow Ghanaian brothers and sisters who live and work here, in all their activities,” Ms. Aheto added.
The anniversary event brought together leaders of the Council of Ghanaian Associations (COGA), executives of the GaDangme Association, community elders, and members of the Ghanaian diaspora across the U.S. The gathering highlighted the importance of unity among Ghanaian communities abroad in preserving cultural heritage while contributing to national progress.
