The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a public announcement warning Ghanaian nationals of strict penalties for overstaying in Ethiopia.
According to the notice, the Ethiopian Immigration and Citizenship Services (ICS) has begun enforcing fines under the country’s amended immigration regulations, passed in October 2024. The penalties include a fine of USD 3,000 for overstays of less than three years, and USD 5,000 for overstays exceeding three years. Failure to pay these fines may result in further legal action.
The Ministry urged Ghanaians to comply fully with Ethiopian immigration laws and to ensure that their stay does not exceed the authorized period. It emphasized that the new measures are part of Ethiopia’s broader efforts to strengthen immigration control and enforcement.
The announcement also highlighted the importance of Ghanaian nationals seeking assistance when necessary. For support, travelers are advised to contact the Ghanaian Embassy in Addis Ababa or call +251 11 371 1402.
Officials noted that reopening Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Mexico and strengthening ties with other nations remain part of the government’s broader agenda to protect citizens abroad while promoting international cooperation.
