Ghana will establish a new Trade Office in Jinan, Shandong Province, China, in 2026 as part of efforts to deepen bilateral trade and investment relations between the two countries.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, when the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, paid a farewell call on her in Accra.
Hon. Ofosu-Adjare explained that the new office will serve as a hub for promoting Ghanaian exports and facilitating investment opportunities. She disclosed that Ghana is ready to sign a Zero-Tariff Agreement with China, adding that trading in local currencies has already commenced between the two nations.
“If we are able to trade in our own currencies, Ghana’s currency will be strengthened, because the bulk of our trading goes to China,” she said.
The Minister expressed appreciation to Ambassador Tong Defa for his close engagement with the Ministry during his tenure and commended him for his dedication to attracting investment into Ghana. She wished him well in his future endeavours and expressed optimism about the continued strengthening of Ghana–China relations.
Ambassador Tong Defa, for his part, applauded the Minister’s efforts in advancing bilateral cooperation. He revealed that more Chinese companies are eager to invest in Ghana and expressed confidence that Ghana’s exports to China would increase.
“I am happy that Chinese businesses are doing very well under President Mahama,” the Ambassador noted.
The establishment of the Jinan Trade Office is expected to boost Ghana’s economic diplomacy in Asia and further consolidate the country’s trade partnership with China.
